Trying to stay ahead with new job income

submitted

27m. Out of work for a few months, lived on savings and opened one credit card. I’ve been at a new job for two months that pays 70k (I take home about 5k a month after taxes, 401k, healthcare etc).

I’ve been having a hard time keeping my checking account above 2k. I have 1.5k in my savings account. Might just be a matter of waiting for my paychecks to catch up to me?

My rent is $950/month, other expenses including bills, medicine, food, subway card etc add up to about $800. My credit card debt is 5k and I have 6k in student loans I’d like to restart chipping away at. Just feel a bit lost with smartly handling my new income outside of making a budget spreadsheet which I did last week.

Any tips on catching up after a bit of time unemployed, or smart steps I can take now that will help me in the long run would be great! I just recently started kind of seriously being cognizant of my budget versus just making sure I get by month to month so please be nice to me :)
