Nicholls said vulnerable cities could learn lessons from Tokyo, which sank by about 5 m (16 feet) until it banned groundwater extraction in the 1970s.

Of course it always comes down to the actions of corporations on the environment leading to disastrous effects. Pair this with China being the worst at properly doing civil engineering and you shouldn't be shocked these major cities are at such a risk
