How to Budget for a Vacation When Prices Keep Rising

Summary

Domestic airfare dropped 1.3% from August 2023 to 2024, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data. Car rental prices are also lower — down 8.4%. However, hotel prices have slightly risen over the past year (up 1.8%)

Domestic flights are often more affordable than international ones. If you head to a country in Central America, your dollar will go further than it would in Florida.

If dining isn’t the main objective of your trip, buy groceries so you can cook food in your accommodations. Opt for a walkable destination or someplace with good public transportation to avoid pricey add-ons like renting a car.

Don't forget about using airline miles to help pay for your vacation flights. Many credit cards offer extra cash back when you charge certain travel categories. Many companies offer discounts on transportation and hotels.

We really should be back to coupons and deal finders. It's not worth paying full price for things these days, not that it ever was.

Companies decided to stop giving them out! Everybody I know loved them!

I know I jumped all in on trying to do lots of coupon clipping. Been a dry well these past few years.

This might be one of the biggest tragedies in the last decade. No more extreme couponing.

I try to do a couple a year. It's doable if you're not looking for the most bougie trip.

I need to actually search for deals then. I always struggle with affording some of these flights.
