Five Years on the IndieWeb

Summary

Five years ago, in early 2019, I stumbled upon the IndieWeb, a movement and community dedicated to modernizing the personal website. Iquickly became enamoured with its ideas and spent the next year revamping mywebsite and blog to make it more compliant with their standards.

ActivitiesPub and Mastodon are just a few of the applications available on the IndieWeb. You can even self-host them, if you've got the time and inclination to do so. It's basically the old school web - with some extra metadata for the sake of interoperability.

The federation concept is honestly interesting but adoption will continue to be limited until it is made more user friendly. Going through the process described sounds arduous as someone who doesn't want to go through a massive list of steps just to get started.

You know laymen to get in on it and being overly complicated will be too much of a barrier for most

Which is a shame because it solves some real problems

Which is why I hope it succeeds. I'll root for it but won't be able to help with it until it gets itself together.

I really love the concept but it's almost too disjointed to keep going
